Thank you for considering in sharing what you have, we do however want to ensure that your gift is truly a gift by sharing some our hopes:
- We value ‘stuff’ that is in good condition. We would like to treat every person with dignity and respect, so we would like to give gifts that enhances that message. As the giver, giving gifts that are clean and not broken also communicates this message about yourself and your view of others.
- We value ‘stuff’ that is truly free, that’s not given with the expectation of receiving a lot of credit or filling in of reports (although we won’t object to write an official thank you letter if required). The reason for this is that it creates an unhelpful power dynamic within the community and between us and the ‘giver’. We believe in giving in a relational manner, and value trust from ‘giver’s that we will know best on how and when to distribute gifts. Often taking pictures in the community and putting up banners is a harmful process in a community who have sad stories to tell about ‘hit-and-run’ organisations and exploitive donators. We work hard on building equal relationships in the community, and value our ‘givers’ supporting us in this process.
- We value friendship with ‘givers’. We would like to share our story with every person who is interested in listening and explore different ways to further involvement, long-term relationships, and not just once-off contact.
- It helps us a lot if ‘stuff’ can be delivered to us. We have a shortage of staff with driver’s licences, and often the petrol is worth more than the gift itself.
