It doesn’t have to be like this

The New York Times published a article (and accompanying graphic video) on a mob justice murder in  Diepsloot this week. It is tragic.

And it doesn’t have to be like this.

Oasis has been working with young people form Diepsloot, Cosmo City and surrounding communities for 5 years now. And, we have been amazed at the incredible potential and commitment of young people from these communities.

All our youth and children’s work as well as our Greenlight project that reaches out to girls involved in at risk of becoming involved in commercial sex work are run by a team consisting mainly of youth from these communities. They do incredible work. They are committed, sacrificing every day to transform themselves and our communities.

Terrible things happen around here. It is tragic that it takes the New York Times to highlight some of it. But, incredible hopeful and inspirational people also emerge from here – now, that is stories worth covering.

Watch Thomas, engineering graduate from Diepsloot, speak about his time at university as one example of how things can be different.
